Common IT & cybersecurity questions

Do I really need Microsoft 365, or can I keep using free email?

Free or ISP email (Gmail, Bigpond, Outlook.com and the like) works fine for personal use, but for a business it quietly holds you back — and exposes you to real risk. Microsoft 365 is about far more than email; it is the secure foundation your whole business runs on.

Why Microsoft 365 is worth it

  • Professional email on your own domain ([email protected]) — more trustworthy to clients and far better for your brand than a free address.
  • Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive — secure file storage and collaboration, so your documents aren't scattered across personal drives and USB sticks.
  • Security controls free email simply doesn't offer — MFA, conditional access, encryption and data-loss prevention.
  • Reliability and support backed by Microsoft's global infrastructure and financially backed uptime.
  • Ownership and control — you own the accounts and data, and can add or remove staff cleanly when people join or leave.

The hidden risk of free email for a business

Consumer email accounts are frequent targets for hijacking, and once compromised they are hard to recover because there is no admin control and no business-grade support. If a staff member leaves, you may have no clean way to retain or hand over their mailbox. And you have almost no ability to enforce security policy.

Which plan is right?

Most Perth SMBs are best on Microsoft 365 Business Standard (email, Office apps, Teams) or Business Premium (which adds advanced security and device management). The single biggest factor, though, isn't the plan — it's whether it is secured properly rather than left on default settings, which is where we add the most value.
